Chesapeake Public Library (CPL) is seeking a dynamic Public Information Coordinator to be part of an award-winning marketing team. The Public Information Coordinator develops, delivers, and manages accurate, timely, clear, and engaging communication products which promote the Library’s programs, services, and community impact. Reporting to the Library Director, this position oversees marketing, media relations, branding, and digital outreach in collaboration with Library Administration, staff, and City partners. The position will work in close collaboration with the City Public Communications Department and other City communicators.
Encompassing a Central Library, six area libraries, two Mobile Edition outreach vans, multiple fleet vehicles, and digital services, CPL is a vibrant community hub with 201,000 registered users, 1.2 million annual checkouts, and approximately 12,500 weekly visitors. The Chesapeake Public Library serves the citizens of the second-largest city in the Commonwealth and is located in the center of Hampton Roads, a thriving coastal metropolitan area composed of seven cities and 1.8 million residents in the region.
Primary responsibilities:
- Communications & Media Relations
- Create and distribute public information materials and news releases.
- Maintain the Library’s public image across media, web, publications, and social platforms.
- Manage and create social media content, including scheduling, engagement monitoring, and basic analytics.
- Serve as a media liaison and assist with urgent or crisis communication as needed.
Marketing & Branding
- Develop and implement marketing and branding plans which align with City standards for content, brand, style, and other factors..
- Design promotional materials using Canva and train staff in consistent design practices which adhere to City branding standards and style.
- Partner with City departments to produce coordinated outreach and promotional campaigns.
- Ensure all materials are accessible, inclusive, and reflect the Library’s mission.
Mascot & Visual Branding
- Manage the use of the Library mascot, Dizzy, in all aspects of marketing and outreach.
- Coordinate in-house creation and contracted artist work for Dizzy graphics and visual assets.
- Maintain consistent, high-quality mascot branding aligned with City guidelines.
- Community Engagement & Outreach Support
- Collaborate with Library staff to promote programs, events, and outreach activities.
- Capture photos and videos for marketing and promotional use.
- Support communication strategies that strengthen relationships with community partners.
Digital Presence
- Monitor digital engagement metrics and recommend improvements.
- Coordinate updates to Library web content.

Requirements
Preferred Qualifications: Experience working with public libraries or city government
Vocational/Educational Requirements: Requires any combination of education and experience equivalent to a bachelor’s degree in public communications or a closely related field.
Experience: In addition to satisfying the vocational/education standards, this class requires a minimum of two years of related, full-time equivalent experience.
Special Certifications/Licenses: Requires a valid driver’s license and driving record in compliance with the City Driving Standards. Virginia Public Librarian Certification
Special Requirements: Employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours. in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. Emergency operations support work and work locations may be outside of normal job duties.
