The Rebuild Foundation
Company Overview
The Rebuild Foundation is an artist-led, community-based platform for art, cultural development, and neighborhood transformation.
Founded by artist and social innovator Theaster Gates, Rebuild supports artists and strengthens communities by providing free arts programming and creating new cultural amenities on the South Side of Chicago. Our mission is to demonstrate the impact of innovative, ambitious and entrepreneurial cultural initiatives and is enriched by three core values: Black people matter, Black spaces matter, and Black objects matter.
In 2022, Rebuild received a grant from the Mellon Foundation to support the archiving and cataloging of the four important collections housed at Stony Island Arts Bank: The Johnson Publishing Company Reference Library, the Frankie Knuckles vinyl collection, the Ed J. Williams collection, and the Glass Lantern Slide collection.
