Company History
Atlantic City, New Jersey, incorporated in 1854, is located on the coast of the Atlantic Ocean, on the southern edge of New Jersey, in Atlantic County. Atlantic City has earned the title “Queen of Resorts” by offering pristine beaches, lodging, dining, entertainment and amusements for all ages, tastes and incomes since the 1880’s. It is home to 39.260 residents (2016 U.S. Census estimate) and plays host to millions of visitors each year.
The Atlantic City Free Public Library was founded in 1901. That first library was housed on the third floor of City Hall, where service began on April 3, 1902. On November 1, 1903 the library formally opened its doors in a wood frame house at Illinois and Pacific Avenues. Andrew Carnegie subsequently donated $71,000 for the building of a new structure at this location. The new structure opened in 1905. In 1985, the library moved to its current home at Tennessee and Atlantic Avenues. The library provides access to books, magazines, DVDs, music, audiobooks and electronic resources, as well as a variety of programs, exhibits and training for all ages. The library operates one branch. The new Richmond Branch Library is constructed in the Richmond Avenue School and opened in February 27, 2013. Measuring in at 3,000 square feet, the new library offers five times the available space of the previous branch, which served the community from 1923 to 2009. During construction, Library Express, a temporary store-front version of the branch on Atlantic Avenue, was open from April 2010 to October 2012. Beginning August 2012, the Library assumed the asset and management of the Atlantic City Historical Museum located on the Garden Pier. The Pier was sold by The City of Atlantic City in 2016. The library vacated the Pier and incorporated the Museum collection into The Atlantic City Heritage Collection housed at the Main Library.
