Company History
Although our Library System was organized in the early 1950’s, the history of library service to the people of Jackson County goes back at least to the turn of the century. A report in the Jan. 25, 1907, edition of the local newspaper, the Pascagoula Democrat Star, reported that on “January 17th quite a number of ladies and gentlemen met in the parlor of the Episcopal rectory and organized the Pascagoula Free Library Association. Similar reports and letters suggest public reading rooms appeared in several communities in the early 1900’s.
Jackson County Library System: In 1951 the Ocean Springs Women’s Club Library and the Moss Point City Library were asked to join with the Pascagoula library in forming a county-wide library movement. As a result of this effort the Jackson County Board of Supervisors voted a 1/2 mill tax to fund county-wide library service. The three branches came together to form the Jackson County Library System - the first county library board was appointed in February, 1952. The county-wide Library System was totally reorganized in November of 1970, when George County joined with Jackson County in forming the Jackson-George Regional Library System.
