Gallagher Law Library

Company Overview

Founded in 1899, the University of Washington School of Law is one of the nation’s top public law schools; it also enjoys strong private support for leading programs in Asian Law, Global Health, Law & Technology, Tax, and Environmental Law. Located in William H. Gates Hall, a new state-of-the-art facility in vibrant Seattle, the School of Law is also home to the Gates Public Service Scholars program and the Barer Institute for Law and Global Human Services.

The Marian Gould Gallagher Law Library houses the largest legal collection in the Northwest with over 650,000 volumes in print. Gallagher boasts private study cubicles, spacious study tables, law-student only group study rooms, copy rooms and a law-student only lounge. A two-story reading room topped by four skylights provides a grand light-filled space for research and study.

We meld a traditional focus on the rule of law with a modern approach to solving problems and advancing social justice. We actively encourage students to explore their passions and equip them with the intellectual tools and hands-on legal experience they need to be practice-ready lawyers able to work in any field they choose. Students benefit from the multi-functional classrooms with lecterns, two well-equipped mock courtrooms, dedicated study areas, student-focused amenities and an impressive library. Situated on campus just off of "The Ave"—the heart of the University District—and just north of downtown Seattle, Gates Hall provides students with easy access to restaurants, shops and boutiques and is close to the Seattle legal community.

Company History

History
Dedicated on September 12, 2003, William H. Gates Hall is home to UW Law. This 196,000 square foot building features six stories of naturally-lit space, art collections, the largest library in the Northwest and technologically-advanced "smart" classrooms. Gates Hall is named after William H. Gates Sr., a 1950 graduate of the law school, and father of the Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates. Bill Gates Sr. is an active member of the legal community and continues to be engaged with the law school's mission of public service.

The Gallagher Law Library was named in honor of Marian Gould Gallagher, who served as head librarian for UW Law for 37 years. Under her direction, the law library tripled in size and became one of the most respected in the nation.

Our Commitment to Diversity
UW Law pursues diversity and inclusion purposefully and rigorously; in this sense, our work is a continual progression. As an institution that shapes the law locally and globally, the law school recognizes that law is a powerful tool for social change. The entire UW Law community is therefore committed to using our privileged leadership position to advance equality and justice throughout Washington state, the United States and the world.

Honoring Place
