Description
Position Overview: The Research and Instruction Librarian III engages with faculty, researchers, staff, and students at Duke Kunshan University (DKU) to identify current and emerging information needs and to deliver responsive, innovative research and instructional services. Working collaboratively with library colleagues, the librarian develops, provides, and promotes services that support research, teaching, information literacy, and scholarly communication. The position is expected to initiate and develop new information literacy models and programs, lead major outreach efforts, and contribute to policy development and service infrastructure planning that strengthen research and instructional support across the university. The librarian also serves as a liaison librarian to nature and applied sciences, business and other assigned subject areas. The position oversees assigned subject collection development, including resource evaluation, faculty consultation, usage analysis, and participation in vendor review or negotiation processes. In addition, the role supports cultural engagement activities by helping design, promote, and implement programs and initiatives that enrich DKU’s academic and community life. Through instruction, consultations, outreach, collection leadership, and collaborative program development, the Research and Instruction Librarian III plays a key role in advancing the library’s commitment to academic excellence, research literacy, scholarly communication, and vibrant intellectual engagement.

Essential Duties:
Initiate, design, and deliver instruction sessions, workshops, and course-integrated teaching on information literacy, AI literacy, database use, research skills, and discipline-specific research practices.
Develop new or improved information literacy models, programs, and learning materials that can be adapted across courses, programs, or liaison areas.
Provide advanced research consultations to faculty, students, and staff across multiple formats, including in-person, online, and email consultations.
Support literature searching, research methodologies, citation management, and critical evaluation of information sources.
Provide support and guidance for literature reviews, systematic reviews, scoping reviews, and other types of evidence synthesis, including search strategy development and documentation.
Advise on scholarly communication topics, including open access, author rights, research impact, publication strategies, and approaches to enhance research visibility and dissemination.
Develop and maintain instructional materials and research guides using learning management systems, content management platforms, LibGuides, and emerging educational technologies.
Provide guidance on the ethical, effective, and discipline-appropriate use of AI in research and learning, including AI-assisted literature discovery, prompt design fundamentals, source verification, and responsible disclosure practices.
Serve as a liaison to assigned academic departments, such as natural and applied sciences, business, and other areas as assigned, building strong partnerships with faculty, students, and staff.
Lead major outreach initiatives and promote library services, tools, and resources within liaison areas through targeted communication, workshops, events, and relationship-building.
Oversee and assess subject collection development in assigned liaison areas, including selection, evaluation, faculty input gathering, usage review, gap analysis, and recommendations for purchase, renewal, or cancellation.
Lead or participate in resource review, vendor communication, and negotiation processes in collaboration with the acquisitions team and University Librarian.
Contribute to the development or revision of library policies, workflows, service models, and infrastructure plans related to instruction, research services, scholarly communication, AI literacy, collections, or user education.
Contribute to the planning and delivery of cultural, scholarly, and community engagement programs, such as speaker series, exhibitions, thematic events, and research-related public programs.
Support outreach initiatives that enhance the visibility, accessibility, and measurable impact of library services and programs.
Represent the Library in university-wide committees, faculty collaborations, academic support programs, or cross-unit initiatives related to teaching, research, AI literacy, scholarly communication, or student success.
Engage actively in external professional communities, associations, or regional/national library networks.
Present at regional or national conferences and contribute articles, case studies, blog posts, best-practice reports, or other professional outputs that increase the visibility of DKU Library’s work.
Participate in grant-funded projects, research collaborations, assessment projects, or cross-institutional initiatives related to research and instruction services.
Supervise assistants, interns, or student assistants as needed in support of instruction, research services, outreach, or collection projects.
Work toward achieving assigned annual objectives and KPIs, demonstrating accountability for performance and results.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements
Required Qualifications:
Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited program or international equivalent in Library and Information Science, or a subject-relevant master’s degree in a STEM, data, or related field.
At least 4 years of full-time professional academic librarian experience.
Demonstrated ability to initiate and develop information literacy programs, research support services, outreach initiatives, or subject liaison services beyond routine delivery.
Knowledge of STEM, applied science, business, or interdisciplinary research workflows and resources.
Demonstrated understanding of academic research processes, information literacy frameworks, instructional design, scholarly communication, open access, research impact, data literacy, and citation management.
Knowledge of AI and emerging technologies in higher education, including AI-assisted research tools, prompt design fundamentals, responsible and ethical
AI use, and strategies for evaluating AI-generated content.
Familiarity with research and instructional technologies, including citation management tools such as Zotero and EndNote, bibliometric databases such as Scopus and Web of Science, learning management systems such as Canvas, and online tutorial or guide platforms such as LibGuides.
Familiarity with collection development, subject liaison services, reference models, relevant library systems, academic databases, and resource assessment methods.
Ability to oversee subject collection development by evaluating relevance, usage, cost-effectiveness, faculty priorities, and curricular or research alignment across formats.
Ability to support advanced research strategies and evidence-based synthesis, including systematic or scoping review search workflows.
Ability to contribute to policy development, workflow improvement, service planning, or infrastructure planning related to research and instruction services.
Strong written and verbal communication skills in English.
Demonstrated ability to build collaborative relationships with faculty, students, staff, external partners, and professional communities in an international academic environment.
Experience with assessment and evaluation of library instruction, research services, outreach, and collections using qualitative and quantitative approaches.
Strong project management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities and initiatives independently. Education
