Instruction Librarian (2-year Temporary)

The UC San Diego Library is seeking a creative librarian to spend two years collaborating with instructional designers and teaching librarians to deliver general and course-specific instruction.

Learning Services Program Description

The UC San Diego Library’s Learning Services Program supports the campus community’s educational activities by offering subject specific, course-driven, and interdisciplinary face to face and online instruction. Learning Services takes into account all learners served by or connected to the institution, regardless of delivery systems, location, and differing accessibility needs and will incorporate values of information literacy into delivery. Learning Services strives to be the locus of expertise for instructional design and pedagogy that guides instruction services provided by the Library and seeks to create a learning organization that crosses disciplines.

Program activities include:

  • Designing, collaborating on and providing in person subject specific, course driven, writing program partnered, database and general instruction to UCSD patrons.
  • Developing reusable and one time learning objects in response to specific needs.
  • Creating a repository of customizable interactive exercises and assessment options.
  • Creating systems to provide peer to peer evaluations of teaching and/or teaching tools.
  • Designing formative and summative assessment tools.

Responsibilities of the Position

  • Develop and integrate information competency elements into instruction.
  • Participate in peer-to-peer evaluation of Library instructional staff in order to strengthen teaching skills in person and online.
  • Collaborate with colleagues, students and faculty to design and deliver information literacy instruction in person and online.
  • Identify and deliver effective instructional sessions and provide alternate learning opportunities such as LibGuides, train-the-trainer sessions, online tutorials, or other just-in-time methods.
  • Promote student success and retention through advocacy of use of library services and resources.

In addition, the Instruction Librarian will participate in assessment of instruction practices and contribute to assessment efforts regarding online and face-to-face learning. The position will report to the Instruction Coordinator and reside within the Learning Services Program.

The UC San Diego Library has recently undergone a re-organization, creating this new program and position, giving a motivated, innovative person the influence to help contribute to a program from the ground up. This work will include partnering and collaborating with other library and campus programs such as the Library’s Academic Liaison Program and the First Year Experience Program.

Minimum requirements

  • MS from an ALA-accredited Library/Information Science program.
  • Experience providing academic library instruction.
  • Knowledge of current issues and trends in instruction pedagogy and instructional literacies.
  • Ability to use technology effectively to enhance information literacy instruction.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills, including the ability to work independently as well as within a team environment and with diverse groups.
  • Demonstrated continuing growth in cultural competencies, initiative/judgment, self-development & assessment, continuous learning.
  • Willingness to take risks.
  • Demonstrated strong commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion in higher education.

Preferred qualifications

  • Strong commitment to information literacy instruction, and demonstrated aptitude for teaching in multiple formats.
  • Experience creating online guides and instructional tools, including using LibGuides and Blackboard.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of outcomes-based assessment practices.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan, document, and complete projects.
  • Demonstrated willingness to engage in the design and development of new processes.

Salary: Salary and level of appointment in the Librarian series commensurate with qualifications and experience and based on the University of California pay scales.
