The Bitterroot Public Library (BPL) in Hamilton, MT is looking for an experienced, innovative, energetic and service-oriented director. The beautiful rural setting of Ravalli County in western Montana provides great opportunities for outdoor recreation.

BPL is a multi-jurisdictional district library governed by an appointed 5-member board of trustees. We have seven dedicated and experienced staff members and a large number of volunteers. The library serves a population (school districts of Hamilton, Victor and Corvallis) of over 25,000.  It has a $500,000 budget and circulation of 110,000.  Salary for this full-time position is $49,000 - $55,000, based on qualifications and experience.

Required qualifications:

  • Masters of Library Science from an ALA-accredited program.
  • Five years of public library experience with minimum of one year in a management position which includes personnel supervision and budget planning and implementation, or, a combination of experience which provides the equivalent scope of skills and abilities to perform administrative duties.
  • Current Montana State Certification or will acquire within 3 years of hire.
  • Thorough knowledge of library methods, practices and procedures, including administration, reference service, acquisitions, cataloging and processing.
  • Extensive knowledge, use and management of library technologies.
  • Demonstrated leadership in team building and motivation of staff, taking calculated risks, admitting mistakes and manifesting high personal standards.
  • Excellent communication skills in writing, presenting and listening.
  • Ability to travel as necessary.

Preferred qualifications:

  • Successful fund raising and grant writing.
  • Redesign of job descriptions and positions to facilitate changing workflows.
  • Experience with the creation and implementation of emergency procedures.
  • Experience with an ILS consortium.
  • Experience with managing a library website.
  • Experience with Quickbooks and/or BARS.
  • Experience working with district public libraries.
  • Policy and procedure writing and implementation.
  • Community involvement.
