Norwich University, nestled in the beautiful Green Mountains of Vermont, invites applications for the position of Director of the University Library to start summer 2014. The mission of soon-to-be renovated Kreitzberg Library is to develop and provide the information resources, services, and environment that support Norwich University's academic and administrative goals. As home of the University Archives, the Kreitzberg Library assumes an important role at the University as the preserver of institutional memory and heritage, and as a resource for all those with an interest in Norwich University history. The Library serves a broad population including faculty, a residential student body consisting of the Corps of Cadets and traditional undergraduate students, online graduate students, alumni, and local residents. The Director is the chief academic and administrative officer of the Kreitzberg Library, which includes the University Archives. Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- providing direction and leadership to promote the Library’s continued advancement, and
- ensure library improvement through evaluation and assessment,
- develop library facilities and construction projects, and
- advocate for the Library within the University;
- coordinating programs, scholarship, and service activities;
- providing strategic direction to develop dynamic and innovative programs, services, collections, and curriculum-integrated information literacy instruction;
- emphasizing library information resources and information technology to support teaching, scholarship, service, and University operations, for both residential and online constituencies;
- setting the library’s fiscal priorities and direction consistent with strategic use of resources;
- fostering a team approach to managing the library;
- demonstrating ongoing scholarly and professional achievement, and encouraging professional growth for the library’s faculty and staff;
- fostering productive relationships within the University in support of its mission;
- collaborating with other universities and libraries throughout the state, region and nation;
- acting as a library liaison and information literacy instructor; and
- serving as university intellectual property policy and copyright officer.
The Director reports to the Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Dean of the Faculty, participates in University governance, and holds faculty rank. The Director serves as a member of the Faculty Senate Library Committee, President's Advisory Council, and the Executive Board of the Friends of the Kreitzberg Library.
- An MLS degree from an ALA-accredited program is required; a second master’s degree or a doctorate will be viewed positively.
- Academic credentials and record of scholarly and professional achievement sufficient to merit appointment at the rank of associate professor or higher.
- At least five years of academic library experience in a supervisory/administrative capacity.

- Excellent interpersonal, communication, presentation, and negotiation skills;
- Ability to work creatively and collegially to solve problems and plan for the future through participation in consortia and professional associations;
- Success in developing and implementing innovations in delivering library services for on campus and online constituencies;
- Knowledge of emerging library/information technologies and trends;
- Ability to lead the library's essential role in campus educational programs and initiatives, most specifically the cultivation of information literacy across the curriculum;
- Capacity to make strategic decisions regarding collections management and development, to lead and manage a dedicated library staff, and to foster open communication and cooperative relationships in a diverse university community;
- Commitment to and capacity for teaching excellence, student mentorship, professional engagement, and campus citizenship; and
- Knowledge of intellectual property and copyright law.
