How can I add a résumé so employers can find me in the Placement Service bank?

When logged in to your Job Seeker account in JobLIST, go to your profile page by either clicking on "Update My Profile" in the left navigation or your name in the upper right. Select the appropriate options in the Placement Service section of the profile page. At a minimum, the box for "Allow my profile to be searched by employers in the Placement Service (Note: only active profiles can be searched by employers)" must be ticked for employers to find you through the site. At the bottom of the page, click the Browse button to find your résumé file on your local drive. Once you've selected it, be sure to click the Submit button at the end of the page to save your changes.

Why am I getting an error message when I try to submit my updated profile with the résumé attached? Or why am I getting an error message when I try to view the résumé file I've just uploaded?

Be sure there aren't any special or "illegal characters" in the filename and try uploading it again. If you continue to have trouble, please email your document to joblist@ala.org with a description of the problem you're having, and JobLIST staff will be glad to help find a solution.

I'm entering multiple search terms in the "Quick Search" box and I'm not getting any results. What should I do?

Separate your search terms with commas (,) to conduct an "or" search (for example, entering "information literacy, instruction" will find ads that contain either the term "information literacy" or the term "instruction").

How do I identify ads for employers who will be represented at the next conference with a face-to-face ALA JobLIST Placement Center?

On JobLIST's Advanced Search page, tick the box at the bottom of the available criteria options to limit results to those ads from employers who have indicated that they will be attending the next conference with an ALA JobLIST Placement Center. You can identify these same ads in the results for any search on JobLIST by looking for the red asterisk next to job titles on the search results page.

Be sure to check back often as the conference approaches, as many participating employers don't list the positions they will be recruiting for at conference until a week or two out. You can get real-time notification of new ad postings from such employers by performing the search described above and grabbing the RSS feed from the results page.

I see several ads on JobLIST with deadlines in the past. Why aren't these removed from the site?

Because so many employers treat deadlines they include in their ads as a “date of first consideration” but continue to accept applications until the position is officially filled, we do not automatically pull ads on their stated deadlines.

We specifically let employers know each time they post a position that ads stay online for 60 days, unless we're asked to remove them sooner. If they know in advance that they would like the ad to come down on a specific date, they let us know when the order is submitted and we set the ad to expire accordingly. Some also contact us in the middle of an ad’s run (whether or not they included a specific deadline) and ask us to remove the ad because they have had enough applications and want to close the position. Essentially, all employers pay for a 60 day run of their ad, and it is not our prerogative to cut their position’s exposure short unless they request it themselves.

If you see a position that you are interested in, but with a deadline listed that has passed, it could be worth your while to contact the employer and see whether they are still taking applications, as that very likely could be the case.
